Elekta is a medical technology group, providing oncologists, radiation therapists, neurosurgeons and other medical specialists with solutions to treat cancer with radiation therapy, to diagnose and treat brain disorders, as well as workflow software systems. The company’s solutions are used in over 5,000 hospitals worldwide.
Elekta operates in three business areas focusing on specific medical technology needs and clinical solutions:
Neuroscience – provides integrated solutions for stereotactic radiosurgery and minimally-invasive neurosurgery, including the Leksell Gamma Knife, Elekta Axesse, Leksell Stereotactic System and Elekta Neuromag.
Oncology – offers a portfolio of clinical solutions for radiation therapy, including linear accelerators with multileaf collimators, integrated X-ray systems and clinical solutions for patient positioning and fixation. These products include Elekta Compact, Precise Treatment System, Elekta Synergy and Elekta Infinity.
Software – offers integrated treatment planning systems and information and workflow management systems designed to streamline clinical and business operations across the entire spectrum of cancer care, from diagnosis and treatment to long-term follow-up.
Elekta was founded in 1972 by the late Lars Leksell, Professor of Neurosurgery at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. The company’s corporate headquarters continue to be located in Stockholm, and its shares have been listed on the Nordic Stock Exchange since 1994. In fiscal year 2009/10 (ended 30th April 2010), the company generated an operating profit of SEK1.1 billion on net sales of SEK7.4 billion. The company employs approximately 2,500 people worldwide.
