ConvaTec is a leading developer and manufacturer of products for ostomy management, advanced acute and chronic wound care and continence care, and sterile single-use medical devices for hospitals and infusion sets used in diabetes treatment infusion devices.
After 30 years as a division of the pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb, ConvaTec became a separate entity in August 2008, following its divestment to new owners, Nordic Capital and Avista Capital Partners in a deal valued at US$4.1 billion. A month after this transition, in September 2008, ConvaTec acquired Unomedical, a Danish manufacturer of hospital products and infusion devices, from Nordic Capital Fund IV. The combined company, which retained the ConvaTec name, operates through four business divisions:
Ostomy Care, which provides a portfolio of one- and two-piece ostomy systems for people having undergone an ostomy procedure.
Wound Therapeutics, primarily comprised of a portfolio of moist wound dressings, particularly hydrocolloid, Hydrofiber Technology and anti-microbial wound dressings and related products for the advanced treatment of acute and chronic wounds, as well as professional skin care products.
Continence and Critical Care (CCC), principally consisting of the Flexi-Seal faecal management system, a temporary containment device for acute faecal incontinence patients, and the Hospital Care division, which provides an assortment of high-volume medical devices for procedures across the intensive care unit and operating room settings.
Infusion Devices/Industrial Sales. ConvaTec’s Infusion Devices portfolio consists of disposable infusion sets for use with insulin pumps in the treatment of diabetes that are sold to pump manufacturers. Industrial Sales products consist of the same products ConvaTec produces and sells in the Hospital Care division of the CCC business, but sells its products to a few large industrial customers that are closely aligned with the Infusion Devices business.
ConvaTec is headquartered in Skillman, New Jersey, US, and employs nearly 8,000 people worldwide. The company has physical operations in over 35 countries and markets its products in more than 100 countries. It generated sales of US$1.5 billion in 2010 and almost US$1.2 billion in the first nine months of 2011.
