Irosustat is a selective inhibitor of steroid sulphatase (STS), an enzyme that is involved in a key stage of the biosynthesis of oestrogen, a major contributor to breast cancer (BC) among postmenopausal women. The STS pathway gives rise to oestrone and dehydroepiandrosterone, which, in turn, produce oestradiol and androstenediol that can both stimulate the growth of hormone-dependent tumours.
